Civil War Photographers Civil war photography - Now and Then civil war books: photography

Review 1

"Congratulations on your new book. You've obviously put a lot of passion and effort into the book and it shows. The selection(s) of then and now images represents a broad range of locations in both the eastern and western theaters. This must be the most comprehensive range of images and locations in a then-and-now format ever published. People can see history so much easier though the use of this technique and you've done it well. I was impressed with some of the more obscure locations, particularly Andersonville, Fort Delaware, and one of my all-time favorites, Fort Richardson/ninth green."

Foster Eubanks presents in his book ‘Following Civil War Photographers’ a sort of ethereal photographic exercise, showing many original photographs from the civil war period...as if you had a window into the past when compared to the very real color images of today. Being familiar with 19th century photography as a period collodion artist myself, (as Brady, Sullivan, and Gardner where) I enjoyed the since of yesterday merging with today. I recommend this book to anyone interested in American history and enjoys the idea of seeing the past and the present side by side.

I found your book to be delightful as it brings the Civil War to life as few others do. Whether you are a professional military historian or a Civil War Buff, are traveling to see Civil War sites as an individual or with your family this book is the one you want next to you to see the war as the soldiers saw the war.

The cover photo showing the Union soldiers atop Lookout Mountain at Chattanooga is like a three dimensional time machine. Located as I am in Northern Virginia I particularly enjoyed the accurate photographing of Fairfax Court House, now and then.
You have produced an outstanding 'Photographic Time Machine' with your new book. Best wishes for continued success.

Sincerely,

You have taken your interest in the Civil War and the photographic arts and put them together in an enjoyable combination tour into "yesterday" and remain in "today". I believe that for the casual reader of books about the Civil War, this will be a good diversion from the cover to cover text books with the same old photos without any reference to today's world. "Where is that place now?" is a good subject question for the reader with the answer before them.

I have found it personally interesting to see some of the places you have re-photographed today as I have enjoyed the original photographs, of which I have seen many times before but have not put a modern face to it.
